Devan Doe: Fairy Ornaments

Image
Concept:   These are original drawings that I made from a a series called "Fairy Tales" The images were pictures taken of ink on natural recycled paper. The idea I had was to laser engrave them on to wood and then cut their silhouettes out. Once complete they could be stung and hung on a tree. Techniques:   To start I took the raw images in to Photoshop and upped the contrast and turned them to black and white images. I found a good neutral spot in the image and adjusted the white balance which further preserved the line detail and contrast. Having done these drawing on a very textured paper presented interesting problems that could have been completely avoided on regular drawing or inking paper. That said Its still worked out great.  After the images were adjusted I took them in to Illustrator and used the line trace tool which after much adjustments in Photoshop came out great with very clean lines details. I extracted the lines and moved them ...

Devan Doe: Serial Slice

Image
Concept:   My concept was based on creating and industrial spike that looked a mixture of object like the chamber of a gun or the tip of a quill pen.  Modeling Techniques:  I used Boolean union to merge simple objects together. Then sweep 2 to create the cross section. Then Boolean different to create the inner pieces. Materials:  I used a Titanium to give infuses to is industrial aesthetic. I chose to use cardboard to get a good basic understanding of serial slicing and I think the juxtaposition of it industrial aesthetic to the lightness of the cardboard came out interesting.

Concept:  I was inspired by Fractal geometry in nature. This design emulates the decay of wood. The geometry was created from an ancient fractal geometry. Modeling Techniques:  I used Network surface to make the basic leg shape and offset surface to make the object solid. I use pipe and difference to make all the wood lines. I used sweep 2 to make the top section. I used project to make the wood lines and the fractal cut outs. Some of the more complex shapes were implemented form a series of different techniques. Materials:  I had two versions that I liked one was made out of wood and the other has the top part made out of metal and the bottom made out of a reflective white painted surface.

Devan Doe: Laser Engraving, "Amy Winehouse"

Image
Concept: This assignment is based on a drawing a I did for a graphic novel I'm working on in which the popular musician Amy Winehouse has turn into a zombie. The idea that you you never really appreciate something until its gone or the idea that people never really appreciated her music until she died tragically has a great deal of importance in my inspiration.   Programs: The original image was first put into Photo shop to clean up by making it black and white, changing the white balance, and making sure the contrast was ideal for line art tracing. I then imported it into illustrator and used that image to do an image trace. I expanded the lines and exported those to the program for laser engraving.  Materials: I used a birch wood and this was the result after not finishing the wood. I enjoy the product at this stage more than using wood varnish. the contrast is very nice and would be diffused...

Devan Doe: Pepakura "Look away"

Image
Concept: I wanted to make a gesture that showed apathy and disconnect. A bust is a representation of one of the most emotive parts of the human body the head, face, neck, and shoulders. Without having the ability to make a detailed face with the amount of polys I was limited to I decided to show all of the other emotive qualities this fraction of the human body has to offer. I also wanted to abstract the proportions of a standard human form by elongating the neck and head. I think in future projects I will exaggerate this more. Modeling: I modeled this in maya. I used references for the head shape but not for the proportion of the head to the shoulders. Looking back on that I might have looked at a reference prior to distorting the form so that it was still in the context of proportionate until I distorted it. Material: The material Black Glass in Keyshot would be ideal for the finished product but I will have to experiment on how to make this out of a mo...
